The Australian Drag Racing fraternity is in shock today after pictures emerged of the burnt-out shell of Wayne Price's once immaculate Ford Mercury Top Doorslammer. The Doorslammer along with truck and trailer, was stolen from Sydney's Rooty Hill RSL in the early hours of Sunday morning, after Price had attended an event at the local Western Sydney International Dragway.
The remains of the '49 Mercury shell were found completely burnt out on a Sydney roadside 60 kilometres west of Sydney in the early hours of Wednesday, with the chassis, engine, and running gear no-where to be found.
It has been reported that the truck and trailer had been recovered, although both were damaged.
It is yet another cruel blow to a team who have struggled to gain any sort of consistency in their short drag racing career. Price had an accident while testing the Mercury at Willowbank Raceway in 2003, before the car had made a competitive pass. Price made his comeback to the sport earlier in 2005, and was looking forward to being a competitive force in the Top Doorslammer Championship.
If anyone has any information regarding the disappearance of the race car, truck or trailer, they are urged to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
