News : NSW Champs Featuring Andrew Rowe Memorial Challenge This Saturday at WSID
Posted by Grant Stephens on 2004/11/25 11:55:44

Entries for the November 27 WSID national open have topped 222 and are still climbing in the last days of entries, setting a new record for local one-day events. The event, tagged the NSW Championships, will be the second round of the 2004-2005 WSID track championship, and will feature all Group 2, 3 and 4 ANDRA brackets, along with Supercharged Outlaws.

Entries for Supercharged Outlaws have reached 18, all local vehicles except for the Brisbane-based team of Simon Holgerson, making for an attractive feature bracket. In addition there will be testing underway by at least five Group 1 race teams, including the Top Fuel cars of Terry Sainty and Luke Shepherd.
The Andrew Rowe Memorial Super Stock Challenge, postponed from the rained-out October 23 event, will start with 12 entries, down on the expected number but the same as that which turned out for the running of the Nationals at Willowbank recently.

Of interest also is the strong entry list for Super Sedan, with 69 starters. Other bracket entries are: Competition six, Modified 25, Super Street 41, Modified Bike 18, Junior Dragster 13, Super Gas nine and Screaming Eagles Harley six.

The whole package will, of course, be boosted by a demonstration of the sensational stunt flying by Australian Champion Pip Borrman at 5.15 pm. That’s definitely not one to miss.

ANDREW ROWE MEMORIAL SUPER STOCK CHALLENGE

November 27 will see the staging of the (postponed) Andrew Rowe Memorial Super Stock Challenge at WSID, the revival of one of the biggest tin top race meetings in Australia.

This event commemorates a prominent and passionate drag racer, Andrew Rowe, who died in a highway accident in Victoria. He and brother Wayne were among the toughest of their breed for a decade and a half until Andrew’s death. With Wayne driving and Andrew in charge of the mechanicals, the pair tore up Super Stock and the Pro Stock with a series of Chevs and Holden-based sedans. Andrew belied his disabled condition with a skill and understanding of sedan drag racing that put the pair on top of the tree.

The Andrew Rowe Memorial was created to commemorate Andrew’s contribution to drag racing in Australia. It was last run in January 2000, when Canberra-based Pro Stock racer Bruce Leake was the victor. Over the years some of the best names in sedan drag racing have claimed the title, including Tony Busscher (twice), Peter Sammut (twice), and Peter Michael.

With the revival of drag racing in NSW it was determined that bringing back the Andrew Rowe Memorial would be an appropriate way to go, and with the agreement of Andrew’s brother Wayne, the decision was made.
